President Donald Trump says the United States is working with other nations to help secure the Strait of Hormuz so commercial shipping can move safely through one of the world’s most important energy routes. Trump said keeping the narrow shipping lane open is critical for global energy markets. While the United States produces much of its own oil, many other countries depend heavily on shipments that pass through the channel. “You only need a few people dropping mines here or there, and you lose the strait. I’m demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory because it is their territory. It’s the place from which they get their energy, and they should come, and they should help us protect it.”
