A special report from the NDSU Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies tells a troubling story regarding the Strait of Hormuz shutdown and its impact on fertilizer markets. The report said that 43 percent of global urea exports, 44 percent of sulfur exports, and 27 percent of ammonia exports originate from the Gulf region. The loss of the sulfur supply impacts phosphate production, including DAP and MAP, in China, Morocco and Indonesia. If the closure continues for weeks or months, the NDSU analysis said it would have a big impact on this year’s farm profitability.
