South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has signed a bill into law that temporarily bans the sale and production of cell-cultured protein products in the state. The ban takes effect July 1 and will remain in place for five years, expiring in June of 2031. Under the law, it will be a misdemeanor offense to sell, distribute, manufacture, or hold cell-cultured protein for sale in South Dakota. Rhoden said the measure represents a compromise after debate within the state’s livestock industry.
