In the Agricult-HER Women in Agriculture series, Don Wick speaks with Julie Tesch, president and CEO of Minnesota’s Center for Rural Policy and Development. Julie shares her experiences growing up on a dairy farm, her career highlights, and her passion for helping rural youth engage in agriculture. They discuss the significance of mentorship and the future of agriculture, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and support for new entrants into the field. Throughout the podcast, Julie discusses the evolving role of women in agriculture. She believes that women tend to lead differently than men, often focusing on relational skills and listening to diverse perspectives. “Not good or bad, just different. I think women are more relational; they listen for different things and then execute according to that,” she observes. Moreover, she notes the growing involvement of women in various agricultural sectors, including commodity groups and agribusiness. “You’re seeing around Minnesota so many women involved in leadership now in agriculture,” she states, highlighting the positive shift towards more inclusive leadership in the industry.
