President Trump says he has reached the framework of a deal with NATO on the future of Greenland and will no longer move forward with tariffs previously threatened against European countries. Trump made the announcement on Wednesday from Davos, Switzerland, following a meeting with the NATO Secretary General, saying the discussions cover Greenland and broader Arctic security issues. As part of that understanding, tariffs scheduled to take effect Feb. 1 will be paused while talks continue. The announcement marks a shift from earlier rhetoric, after Trump said the United States would not use military force to acquire Greenland but continued to argue U.S. ownership would strengthen NATO. Trump had previously imposed a 10 percent tariff on Denmark and other European allies over the issue, prompting Europe to suspend approval of a trade deal reached in July. Further negotiations are expected as discussions continue between the U.S. and NATO leaders.
