Barges on the Mississippi River have faced delays this month as sub-zero temperatures and ice have slowed operations, according to the USDA’s latest Grain Transportation report. Warmer weather in recent days is expected to help melt some of the ice. The frozen conditions have not only disrupted traffic but also lowered water levels in the lower river system, which are hovering just above the “low threshold.” Grain shipments rely heavily on barges to move products to ports for export.
