American Farm Bureau Federation Vice President Scott VanderWal, who is also president of the South Dakota Farm Bureau, said farmers need the certainty of a five-year farm bill. “We already know that fertilizer prices are going to be quite a bit higher. Landlords aren’t voluntarily reducing rents, and so we will certainly see higher costs in a very low commodity price environment,” said VanderWal. “I think the temperatures are going to start rising as people go in for loan negotiations. I’ve already heard from some people who think they’re probably gonna be told no. That will be a very unfortunate thing; that’s where the cries from the country are going to start coming up.”
