Wimbledon, North Dakota grower Mike Clemens says this year’s season has been full of challenges and surprises. The derecho that hit his farm in late June is one example. “Crops were totally destroyed and ripped up and replanted, and now we’re into the harvest mode,” said Clemens. “The replant stuff, I’m glad we did it because you definitely can see it in the field, much better stands that are out there and better yield.” Clemens added that more weather issues struck late in the season, including a hailstorm that damaged 200 acres just before harvest. “A storm popped up at three o’clock in the morning and just put a bunch of small hail out there and just shelled all the beans out. That was kind of disheartening.”
