Days after formalizing a trade agreement with the United States, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his resignation. Ishiba, who has been on the job for less than a year, faced criticism after his party suffered important political losses in an election in July. Ishiba said he stayed on to finalize the trade deal. The trade agreement was announced on Thursday. It includes a 15 percent U.S. tariff on Japanese imports and a pledge by Japan to buy more American products, including rice and soybeans.
