Heavy rains continue to drench northeast South Dakota, leaving fields saturated and crops at risk. Dairyland Seeds District Sales Manager Keith Rekow says the ground has reached its limit for moisture. “The joke down here, a 20 percent chance means it’s going to rain an inch plus. We’ve seen that five days in a row last week, and weren’t expecting much, but got a substantial amount. Now the soil conditions are fully saturated.” Rekow adds that flooding is severe enough that a notable portion of fields may never reach harvest. “There are some spotty regions, but there’s probably 20 to 25 percent of these (fields) that won’t be harvested due to the saturation.” In Brown and Day Counties, rainfall totals are nearing nine inches in less than a week, worsening the outlook for affected crops.
