The Aussie rules went into effect after BSE was confirmed in 2003. In 2019, Australia opened its market to U.S. beef, but the traceability requirements were so severe that only shelf-stable products, not fresh meat, were accepted. In the last 20 years, Australia exported $29 billion of beef to the U.S. but denied access to its market.
