University of Minnesota Extension held its Crops and Soils Day in Crookston this week, where they covered a variety of topics about small grains diseases, soil health and management, and research into how herbicides are impacting the sugarbeet crop. Extension Sugarbeet Agronomist Tom Peters was on hand to give an update on a series of experiments that will allow researchers to understand not just the benefits of herbicides, but also their shortcomings. “In the experiments, there’s necrosis injury, there’s growth reduction injury, and there’s malformation injury. So, I think it’s a wonderful picture for the growers as to what we can potentially see from these treatment combinations. The question is, are we going to lose yield, and I don’t know. I think in many cases they’ll all yield the same, but that will be something that we’ll work out in September and October.”
