Nebraska’s winter wheat harvest is nearing the finish line. University of Nebraska Extension Water and Cropping Systems Specialist John Nelson says weather slowed things down, but otherwise, they had a decent winter wheat crop this year. “I think guys were getting started pretty well in the last week of June and got shut down by rain there, but here it’s been dry, and I think that’s pushed everybody over the finish line for the most part.” Nelson says fungicide applications helped with yields but weren’t necessary this year. “Some of our high-end growers will go three passes with fungicide. Some were making 90 to 100 bushels on dry land, but another guy I talked with didn’t put any fungicide on this year and still had really good yields.”
