President Donald Trump has announced a 35 percent tariff on all Canadian goods starting next month, citing Canada’s failure to curb the flow of fentanyl into the United States. In a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump said the tariff “may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship.” The move signals a sharp shift in U.S.-Canada trade relations. Although little fentanyl enters through the northern border, the White House is tying trade action to the issue. Canada recently dropped a proposed digital services tax following Trump’s threat to halt negotiations. Still, a Canadian official said the country is preparing for a future deal that includes some level of tariffs.
