USDA has announced waivers to increase line speeds in pork and poultry plants. The Food Safety and Inspection Service has been evaluating the benefits of increased line speeds since 2021. The process is now underway to make this change permanently. Without this program, the National Pork Producers Council said pork producers could have had an additional loss of $10 per head. The union representing meatpacking and processing workers said this decision impacts worker safety and is “a recipe for disaster.’
