University of Minnesota Regional Extension Educator Anthony Hanson says this winter’s lack of snow cover did impact pests overwintering in the top few inches of the soil. “Because there was not as much snow and we did have some cold snaps, the soil temperatures really got pushed down so some of our insects, like corn rootworm, we might be seeing close to 50 percent mortality in some places like here in west-central Minnesota.” Alfalfa weevil is another pest that may be impacted.
