At the National Farmers Union Convention, in Oklahoma City, David Reis, a rancher from Lyman County, South Dakota, spoke about the challenges and uncertainty facing agriculture. “I really kind of got involved because of the fourth generation. I want to see agriculture thrive and be viable so that family farmers and ranchers can be in the business for generations to come,” said Reis. His family-run cow-calf operation is benefiting from good cattle prices, which are helping support the broader agricultural economy in South Dakota. Despite the good market for cattle, Reis acknowledged the unpredictability of agriculture. “The uncertainty is the worst part,” he said, reflecting on national policies like tariffs. “He makes announcements, the President does in the market, they go up and down accordingly so it’s hard to say it might be good for us, or might not.”
