California Congressman Jim Costa plans to challenge Ranking Member David Scott of Georgia for the leadership role on the House Agriculture Committee. Costa is the second-highest ranking Democrat on the committee. Scott became the senior member of his party on the agriculture committee after House Agriculture Committee Chair Collin Peterson was defeated in 2020. In addition to health issues, Scott has been criticized for his inability to move forward with Democratic objectives in farm policy. Costa has been in Congress since 2005 and his family’s background is in dairy and almond farming.
