Congress must pass legislation to fund the federal government beyond December 20 or agree to another continuing resolution. The chore list for Congress during the lame-duck session also includes the National Defense Authorization Act, funding for Ukraine, and disaster legislation. National Pork Producers Council Assistant Vice President of Domestic Policy Chase Adams hopes a farm bill is also part of the discussion. Language dealing with California’s Proposition 12 is part of the House farm bill and is a priority for the NPPC. “That is an existential threat to the pork industry. It’s an existential threat for agriculture at large. If states can pass laws that prohibit the sales of certain ag products based on production or housing standards, that’s really got to be our focus right now.” If it is not addressed before the end of the year, Adams says it will be a priority for the new congress.
