Weaning season is approaching quickly. Managing stress in calves is vital to minimize production losses from weaning. “I’ve always found out the best way to wean calves is to have the cows being fed something similar to what the calves are going to be weaned onto,” said Karl Hoppe, livestock systems specialist, North Dakota State University Extension. “It’s different if they’ve never eaten it before. They’ll not eat for several days until one gets hungry enough to take the risk to eat it.” However, the several days of not eating can create a pretty large setback.
