Milk production in the 24 major dairy states totaled 18.9 billion pounds in May. That’s down less than one percent from May of last year. In South Dakota, milk production rose more than ten percent. That has been boosted by the addition of 19,000 cows to South Dakota’s dairy herd in the past year. Minnesota milk output declined 0.6 percent. The number of cows milking in Minnesota dropped 8,000 head over the past year.
