The USDA announcement on school nutrition standards generally received a positive reaction from the ag industry. According to National Milk Producers Federation Director of Regulatory Affairs Miquela Hanselman, flavored milk plays an important role in children’s diets. “A big reason we want to keep flavored milk in schools is because it tends to be the preferred choice of children.” While reducing added sugars from children’s diets is important, Hanselman points to studies showing a decrease in milk consumption when flavored milk is removed from school menus.
