National Sunflower Association Executive Director John Sandbakken is not concerned about the lower acreage numbers being reported for sunflowers for this year. “We’ve had two really large crops in 2022 and 2023. There is still quite a bit of seed in the bin and prices aren’t quite as strong as they would normally be at this time of year.” That’s because Sandbakken sees lower acreage numbers for sunflowers this year as an opportunity for farmers. “We’re going to be using up this seed, and going into the next market year in October we’re going to be in a much better position. Stocks are going to go lower, so those that do plant sunflowers might have a really good opportunity.”
