Calving season is in mid-swing for most ranchers, but not all. NDSU Extension Livestock Systems Specialist Karl Hoppe says that May calving is becoming more and more common in the upper Midwest. “We’ve seen lots of people switching to May calving due to excessive blizzards in March and April,” Hoppe says, also pointing out that operations with more cattle and less labor can benefit from the practice. While there are benefits to May calving in colder regions Hoppe says it can lead to lighter calves in the fall, but that ultimately the real answer is “whatever works best for the producer.”
