The number of farms growing wheat has dropped significantly. According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, the number of wheat farms in the U.S. declined more than 40 percent since 2002. There were nearly 170,000 wheat farms in 2002 and just over 97,000 20 years later. The number of farms producing durum wheat had the biggest percentage drop, down nearly 60 percent from 2002.
