USDA’s decision to increase the tariff rate quota for imported sugar is a concern for sugarbeet and sugarcane producers. According to a report from The Hagstrom Report, the American Sugar Alliance is worried this action will set a precedent giving USDA the ability to import more foreign sugar. On March 7, the TRQ for cane sugar increased by 125,000 metric tons raw value for this fiscal year. The increased tariff rate quota comes at a time when U.S. sugar production is approaching record levels.
