Advancing programming to help local meat processors has been a focus for the Minnesota Farmers Union. Intermediary loans are now available through a USDA Rural Development grant program. The first of those loans is expected to be approved by the end of the month. “You don’t have to have 5,000 head of cattle going through a big plant,” said Carol Anderson, chair, MFU Executive Committee. “You can sell locally to your residents, to school districts, to hospitals and keeping everything closer to home.”
