The National Potato Council has submitted comments to the Canadian Food Inspection Service about the risk of potato wart. If the fungal disease was transmitted to the United States, the NPC said the U.S. would immediately lose access to all international fresh potato markets. The direct financial impact to the industry would be $225 million with the indirect costs well into the billions. The NPC said the current Canadian plan is inadequate in controlling the movement of the potato wart.
