Minnesota Pork Producers Association Director of Public Policy, Sustainability and Strategy Lauren Servick served on a panel at MN Ag Expo discussing livestock regulation especially pertaining to California’s Prop 12, and Massachusetts Question 3. Servick says any solution to stopping patchwork regulation like this will be hard to come by. Servick says there are some issues with the EATS act. “This is certainly related to pigs, but you could see how this could stem out to all products within agriculture,” said Servick. Lack of movement on a new farm bill is also a concern. “That’s a logical vehicle to try and move something that provide some certainty for our farmers.” Prop 12 could just be the start of other state by state production regulations that impact agricultural trade in the U.S. Some producers have made updates to facilities to comply with certain regulations, but the economics are tough to make pencil out and can be a detriment to animal and employee welfare.
