Legislation has been introduced on the federal level that would prevent new initiatives like California’s Prop 12. National Pork Producers Council President Elect Lori Stevermer says the main goal is to avoid a patchwork of regulation across the country. “In an ideal situation, legislation would make Prop 12 go away, but we know that’s not likely to happen,” said Stevermer. “We want to look at what we can do to prevent something like Prop 12 from happening again.” It’s important to narrow down the true purpose of any proposal to prevent unintended consequences. Since the implementation there have been reports of higher prices and less pork purchases in California.
