Mud is tough on recently weaned calves and the cattle approaching their finished weight. Maintenance energy requirements increases for those animals, but they likely want to eat less. “They’re going to expend more energy working through the mud and water,” said Zach Carlson, beef cattle specialist, NDSU Extension.“Try to provide some adequate bedding if you can get at them.” Smaller feedings throughout the day can entice feed consumption. This is also a good time to take note of problem areas to address drainage and similar issues in the future.
