Ukraine’s role as an agricultural powerhouse is being threatened by the ongoing war with Russia. The United Nations World Food Program is reporting 31 documented attacks on Ukrainian grain production and export facilities since mid-July. Nearly all the damage has been on the ports and grain terminals on the Black Sea and Danube River. Before the war, Ukraine was responsible for nine percent of global wheat exports, 15 percent of the corn and 44 percent of the sunflower oil. The UN claims Ukraine may not be able to meet its domestic and export wheat demand for many years.
