Milk production in the 24 major dairy states totaled 17.9 billion pounds last month, down a fraction of one percent from October of last year. South Dakota milk production was up 6.6 percent. Over the past year, South Dakota added 13,000 head to the state’s dairy cow herd. Minnesota milk output rose 0.3 percent with milk cow numbers down 2,000 head from a year ago.
