A coalition of advocacy groups is appealing to House Republicans to resist attempts to increase farm support programs in the farm bill debate. Heritage Foundation Senior Policy Analyst David Ditch said additional government subsidies would only increase input costs. “When there are particularly generous programs that provide subsidies, you distort the markets; people become less cost sensitive and people start taking advantage of that.” National Taxpayers Union Free Trade Initiative Director Bryan Riley believes Congress should focus on keeping input prices low by reducing tariffs and other measures. “Let’s get rid of some of these real-world costs being imposed by government that are costing farmers every single day.” The Environmental Working Group was also part of Tuesday’s news briefing.
