USDA announced the Weaned Calf Risk Protection as a new insurance option for livestock producers in select states as a pilot program. “We saw a gap with some of the other livestock programs that didn’t address the cow/calf industry,” said Marcia Bunger, administrator, Risk Management Agency. The pilot program insures against yield losses caused by drought, excessive moisture, hail, wind, frost, disease, and other natural causes. South Dakota is one of the states participating in the pilot program.
