Salem, South Dakota farmer Dawn Scheier is taking a break from harvest with a rain system moving into her area, but says they started harvest earlier this year after corn ripened before soybeans. “This year the corn was ready at under 20 percent moisture in September. We’ve had a really dry year, and I think that’s part of why the corn matured ahead of the beans.” According to Scheier, corn yields have all been below average this year. Despite that, she’s looking forward to a good rain to replenish soil moisture.
