North Dakota Weed Control Association Executive Secretary Merlin Leithold says the weed spectrum in the pastures and rangelands differed this past growing season. “The main problem is still leafy spurge, but Canada thistle was down overall this year. For what reasons, we don’t know.” As far as the big forage crop, Leithold sees destructive weeds like Palmer amaranth and waterhemp on the move. “We’ve seen Palmer as far west as Grant County coming in through screenings, equipment or other seed mixes.”
