As of September 1, there were 74.3 million hogs and pigs in the United States. That’s up slightly from last year and up two percent from the June report. The breeding herd inventory is at just over six million head, down one percent from one year ago. Swine producers weaned an average of 11.6 pigs per litter this past summer, an all-time record. Iowa is the largest pork production state. Minnesota is ranked second and North Carolina is third.
