The Biden Administration is expected to make a ruling to determine whether the GREET (Greenhouse Gasses, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation) or ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) model will be used to determine the effectiveness of fuel sources in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In the most recent episode of The Ethanol Report podcast from the Renewable Fuels Association, President Geoff Cooper says the GREET model is the best way to make that determination. “That’s why we’re encouraging the department of treasury to use the GREET model for carbon assessment on sustainable aviation fuel.” The RFA is working to make sure the agency is aware of the impact of their decision. “If we’re not able to use the GREET model for analyzing the carbon intensity of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, then there’s almost no chance this administration meets its goals of 3 million gallons of SAF by 2030.” Cooper says the administration plans to finalize the rule by mid-October.
