American Crystal Sugar Company General Agronomist Joe Hastings says the sugarbeet crop this year looks fantastic, both despite and because of scarce moisture. “The root hasn’t had a lot of exposure to root rot disease, so we’re fortunate that way and the canopy looks great. We can still find cercospora in the field, but it hasn’t overtaken anything.” Sugarbeets can tap down six-to-eight feet to find moisture in the soil profile so Hastings says yields are looking good. Pre-pile is underway. The moisture should help finish the crop and make digging easier on equipment.
