A Minnesota Turkey Growers Association delegation was in Washington D.C. to advocate their legislative priorities. MTGA Executive Director Ashley Kohls says the availability of CO2 is an important aspect of processing turkeys and is often overlooked by policy makers. “We need to talk about unintended consequences of storing CO2 for industries that utilize it, CO2 is imperative for a lot of animal welfare standards, chilling standards, transportation, and shelf-life.” National Turkey Federation Vice Chairman John Zimmerman, Northfield, Minnesota, also participated in the trip and focused on “continued funding for the animal disease preparedness programs that were introduced in the 2018 farm bill.” When asked about the outlook for farm bill passage before the end of the year, Zimmerman said there were both optimistic and pessimistic views expressed.
