Three Republican senators have introduced legislation to limit the distribution of funds through USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation. The agriculture secretary has broad discretionary authority to use CCC funds. During the Trump Administration, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue used the CCC to compensate farmers for Chinese trade retaliation. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has funded climate projects through this line of credit. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, Kansas Senator Roger Marshall and Indiana Senator Mike Braun said their proposal reduces unauthorized, wasteful spending.
