The Growing Degree Unit accumulation across the Northern Plains is above normal. “Rapid vegetative growth is common this type of year and we’re always susceptible to green snap when crops grow this fast,” reports Jeff Coulter, corn agronomist, University of Minnesota Extension. The corn crop is just entering its reproductive phase. “We’re at the beginning of the critical period for corn. Moisture stress now through early August will really hurt the crop.”
