The extension of California’s Proposition 12 implementation may be helpful in the short-term, but National Pork Producers Council President-Elect Lori Stevermer says there are still a lot of issues going forward. One of the concerns is the potential patchwork of regulations. “If California has one type of regulation, could another state have a different regulation? Maybe it’s more size or more access to the outdoors.” Stevermer, who farms at Easton, Minnesota, is working with lawmakers to address the regulatory hurdle. “The Supreme Court admitted that Prop 12 was a problem, it just wasn’t their problem to fix. We’re having lots of conversations at the state level now to have a long term fix.”
