Labor negotiations continue between unions representing dock workers and the terminal operators of the 29 West Coast ports. These dockworkers have been working without a contract since July of last year. In his monthly update on port activity, the Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said there have been spot labor shortages, but product is moving. Seroka was asked to compare the current disruptions seen at the ports with the supply chain bottlenecks during the pandemic. “At its worst point, which was October 25, 2021, we had 97,000 containers on the docks. Today we’ve got 42,000 and 90 percent of those are zero-to-four days old. At that time we had about 35,000 to 37,000 containers that were nine days or older representing more than 40 percent of all the cargo on the dock.”
