Alfalfa has taken off with the recent heat. North Dakota State University Extension is also reporting an increase in alfalfa weevil development. With the number of growing degree days, larvae are generally between the second and third instar in development. The third and fourth instar larvae do most of the heavy feeding, which may result in crown injury. After the first cutting, farmers are advised to scout for larvae under the windrows. The larvae that escaped the first cutting tend to move under the windrows and will feed in those locations.
