Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigeg says rail safety has stepped up since the derailment at East Palestine, Ohio, but that congress needs to update legislation to prevent more incidents. “Right now if we find an egregious hazardous material related violation that results in fatality, the most we can assess by way of a penalty is around $250,000. If you’re a multibillion-dollar corporation, that’s not enough to really get your attention.” Derailments have declined in recent decades, but the average is still more than one derailment per day in the country. Buttigeg says more follow through is needed from a regulatory standpoint.
