Beginning June 11th, many antibiotics used to treat animals will require a prescription from your veterinarian. North Dakota Delegate to the American Veterinary Medicine Association Dr. Troy Dutton explains the FDA’s rule 263 requires all antibiotics become prescription for food animals. “You have to have a good working relationship with your veterinarian. We call it a Veterinary Client Patient Relationship or VCPR,” says Dutton. Producers are reminded to work with their veterinarian make sure they have things on hand to treat issues during calving that may come up ahead of time. While the rule is changing, Dutton says it shouldn’t be a huge issue. “Those products are still readily available, they’re just going to have a prescription label on them.”
