Expanding the dairy herd is a costly proposition. “If you’re thinking about expanding your herd, you’re going to have to think about higher replacement costs than you might have otherwise,” said USDA livestock analyst Shayle Shagam. Dairy cow slaughter has seen a large increase which is a contributing factor to the heightened cost of replacements at about eight percent above a year ago.
