When the new Congress convenes next month, Pennsylvania Congressman Glenn ‘G.T.’ Thompson will be at the helm of the House Agriculture Committee. Thompson says there are three options for the 2023 farm bill. Number one, the bill could be allowed to expire at the end of September and let it revert to the language established during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s. “Number 2, we could kick the can down the road and do an extension,” said Thompson. “But, that’s a failure to do our job because I think there’s improvements to be made.” Crop insurance and updated reference prices were cited as possible improvements for the next farm bill. The ag committee’s third option is to complete the farm bill before the current legislation expires. “Which really in my mind is the only option.”
